as well as humans still have a way of goofing up systems. There's stories of companies doubling the quantity of chips they order -- (edited)

In an effort, to move up in priority, gain some safety stock, some combination of both or whatever reasons.
The issue is the manufacturer's are looking at it and what happens 2, 3, 4 years from now when you realize that you have a massive overstock of chips and you don't order anything for a year or longer?
Why should we spend massive capital now for new production that won't be ready till then and then be left with fabs that are sitting idle? For chips that are already ancient designs but at the same time, how much does a power controller need to be optimized anyway?
