It's almost always easier to break something than it is to repair it after it breaks.

Everyone acts in self-interested ways when something breaks, but that creates inefficiencies (backlogs, overstocks, etc) that can cause issues for years.
On the plus side, that might eventually be a boon to consumers in some areas as businesses try to unload excess inventory.
