So ... gut check for a kitchen question

We have a gas stove. The range hood goes up to a duct/vent. The vent goes through a cupboard above the stove, then does a 90° turn and follows a duct to outside.
At the base of the cupboard, a rectangle is cut out to allow the connection between the hood and the vent. This rectangle has air gaps, which are allowing air to be blown into that cupboard.
That is some bullshit, right? As far as I know it's always been this way (for 10 years), but the only reason I checked is because we just had a new range hood installed and I opened the cupboard while it was running & immediately noticed the airflow.
So either the new installers fucked up and this is a new problem, or the old installers fucked up and got away with it (or maybe the old range hood design was a better fit).
Regardless, this feels like a bad health situation. I am thinking of using some vent tape to seal it off.
