The movie has style for sure but I expected, nay, required that.
But it felt choppy to me. It was as if it was supposed to be about Dillinger but there was so much jumping around to the other villains of the time (hence the name Public Enemies?) that I didn't get a real feel for the character of Dillinger. Nor did I feel invested in the characters of Purvis or Frechette.
In a number of ways I felt like it was playing by the Hollywood playbook. Here's a scene in a depression era club. And there he is listening to Billie Holliday. Try to surprise me with some lesser known singers of the era.
Crudup as Hoover was nicely done though.
