If the car is worth $2200 and the repairs are approaching that, they'll just write you a cheque and say "go find another car". So, I don't think it's unreasonable at all to expect the same thing from the guy who hit you. If you ask for that and they don't want to, just call your insurance company instead and you'll get what you want.
