I think it's easy to get hung up on storytelling "rules" - if it works use it.

and if you're incompetent, following the rules isn't going to make your story good.

I agree that M. Night, by the sounds of it, shouldn't be following the rules for "The Happening" if he's so unskilled a story teller...
