I think they have to be careful cause depending on the blocking scheme they may get a penalty for illegal man downfield, plus that is a total mind -- (edited)

shift; they are looking for holes and holding the ball to their chest hard; to pull it out and rejig their hand from holding tight to pass would just ask for a fumble and they would have mini-seconds to realize and do it too
