We went out on The Rock Boat on the Norwegian Gem from November 7 - 12 (5 days), then stayed on the same boat for The Melissa Etheridge Cruise Nov 12 - 18 (6 days).
Everyone had to be Vaccinated, with proof of a negative PCR test within 96 hours of sailing, and another (rapid antigen) test during boarding process. I think that everyone (except one person) made it on board.
The GOOD:
- since everyone was vaxxed, it felt comfortable the first few days to be around other people without masks - though most of the venues were outside, there were 2 inside, 1 in a theater, that were a bit nerve-wracking to be inside with a lot of people. However, it wore off. Obviously, someone could have brought COVID on the ship with them, but it was the first time I've felt comfortable enough to be in large groups without masks.
- Lots of LIVE MUSIC. See list below.
- Had a great time with our friends, and our annual Rock Boat cruise is honestly the highlight of the year.
- Lots of fun and great to be disconnected from the internet for almost 2 weeks, save for a few stops.
The BAD:
- 12 days was too much for us old folk. We made it about 9 days before we really got super worn out. (Plus, free beer and buffet food for that long is not super healthy.)
- Some bands dropped out last minute when they tested positive, so that kind of sucked.
- While everyone was vaxxed and tested, people were allowed to get off in Jamaica (were required to wear masks getting off and in the terminal and all), but...were allowed to get back on. That seems like a big hole in our vax bubble where I don't know what other people did off the boat. (We got off but stayed in the port village and masked everywhere.)
Otherwise, a great time!
