I'm finishing my rewatch of the anime before I get into this, but I did take in the first episode.

It follows the first episode of the anime quite closely with some departures for pacing, naturally, since Faye does not appear until the third episode in the original. She's upstaged by the dog!
The first episode of the anime is also one of the darkest and most depressing of the whole series, which makes it a rough place to start.
