I think it's just a bad stretch of musicals not many people wanted to see. -- (edited)

Had the Hamilton movie been able to open in theaters, I have no doubt it would have been successful.

Back in 2019 there was Aladdin, Lion King, Rocketman and Yesterday. Sure, there was Cats, but that was DOA from the moment it was announced.

I think it was just that Dear Evan Hansen, Respect and West Side Story just didn't have audiences.
