it's a good book, but there's literally no plot. it's an exercise in world building, the later books kind of give it plot.

but the plot at that point sucks (thanks Gentry Lee).
so i guess since he has a penchant for building big CGI worlds, that's great, but it would be much better off as a video game... you're going to have to manufacture a lot of drama to make it remotely interesting besides just trying to wow people with scale for 90 minutes.
the book series goes steadily downhill.. trying to make anything of the later books is going to come across as a fever dream.
