I did both about 6 years ago then made my dad do it (it turns out when you have parent/child then your results become much more refined).
First thing I learned was that my mother was 100% pure Quebecer. and we are inbred, so 96% of my DNA results are Quebec relatives. I have received many messages from "3rd" cousins trying to figure out how we are related and we try to match up names and it rarely comes out to anything. Once I got a second cousin hit and she is my second cousin, took just 2 messages to confirm, we met each other's parents when we were kids.
So I made my dad do it, because his family is mysterious, and my results were so flooded by Quebec, the remainder were meaningless. He did! the first thing was paternity confirmed (this is a family joke becauase I look exactly like him). THen I got a second cousin hit. Cathy. Yep, she's my second cousin, instantly confirmed, we met each other as small children. my dad's family and hers were close cousins.
The next thing I learned was there was someone who was a second cousin to my dad. I asked Cathy who it was, she said no clue, not linked to her. I was confused. And then I realized. This must be a cousin from my paternal grandmother. Her life is a mystery. Completely cut off.
This woman from 23andme learned in her 50s that her father was not her father, and went on a search.
A lot of stuff happened, I did the DNA stuff, and Pamela's daughter and especially granddaughter (Shelby) did the paper research. It was completely a team effort.
We found the identity of her father, and last year she met up with her half siblings.
Those cousins are family members now, they are awesome.
