Tim McGraw is 54. Let's say he plays 5-10 years younger (the 1800s and farm living aged you faster, yada yada), so late 40s. He fathers a kid in 1900, so around age 65. Not totally crazy. That kid then fathers a kid in the 50s, in his 50s, which is about when Kevin Costner was born.
