It must be a Sr./Jr. name issue probably not well-elucidated in the official press release. -- (edited)

McGraw plays James Dutton.
His son John Dutton (actor Audie Rick) appears as a kid in 1883, say born 1875. IMDB identifies him as John Dutton Sr. (Assuming McGraw's actual age for his character, he would have been 45 when his son was born).
Dabney Coleman has appeared as Costner's father John Dutton Jr. Imagining a birth date of 1915, John Dutton Sr. would have been 40 when he was born.
Costner plays John Dutton (probably John Dutton III, though I think never stated that way) and using Costner's birth year of 1955, Dabney Coleman's character would have been 40 when he was born.
So it would be correct to say Costner's grandfather appears in the series 1883, but it's not Tim McGraw, and McGraw is the grandfather of John Dutton, but that's not Costner.
Sheridan may have flubbed it himself, because there's a line in Yellowstone where Beth says that losing the ranch would mean "And just like that, seven generations of our family legacy will be taken from you." Even including the youngest generation on the show, they clearly have only had the land for six generations.
