I don't think masking forever is the answer, nor is it inevitable. We don't know what happens next.

Vaccine development and testing is ongoing, as new variants pop up. And again, developing treatments and medicines is ongoing.
Generally, viruses become weaker over time. I think that is where this likely ends.
