1) I truly hope it mutates into something innocuous. We just don't know where it's heading at this point.
2) Delta is still around, but yes it has mostly gone to the wayside, because Omicron is more contagious. Omicron is so contagious it's making everyone catch it, so people aren't impacted by Delta, and then Delta doesn't have much of an impact. It didn't go away. There's an explanation why it decreased in prevalence. Thinking a virus can go away without explanation is a dangerous mind set. Viruses don't just go away. COVID may not be 'COVID' in a few years, but the pieces will be.
3) "So far" is the key. Countries can't stay locked down forever. People do things, people move around/travel, it spreads.
In all seriousness, look at the recent data. I'm speaking the scientists points. This Omicron surge is real. Nothing can stop it. People are attending masked events where the transmission rates are above 90%.
