Nobody in their right mind thought he killed Mysterio. That was just fuel for the conspiracy nuts, like JJJ (and the PE Teacher!). The real damage was the identity thing.
Something I thought of on second viewing, an interesting aspect of the spell is that JJ got $ because of the Mysterio thing. He kept his new status even after the spell wiped out the identity part. That shows the spell did not change much, just the identity side of it all.
So the Avengers are still backing him, etc.
