I'm seen this done in many different ways, it helps to keep it a bit broad, to allow for tailoring to different reading taste.

So saying "read a French cookbook" is a bit too narrow.
But these work:
"book about France" - could be history of France, travel book about France, cooking book about France, historical novel set in France
"book about cooking" - could be a cookbook, or a memoir from a famous chef, or a mystery novel that revolves around a restaurant/bakery (I think there is a mystery series like this where the author actually includes recipes?)
