You know how much I like controversial films. Well lemme tell you, Sweet Movie (1974) is one hell of a dose of 'what the fuck was that?'. -- (edited)
Directed by Yugoslavian, Dusan Makavejev, the best I can suss out is that it's a farcical sex-comedy that doubles as a take-down against the violations inflicted by WW2.
Maybe? I literally don't know.
The story crosses the paths of a Canadian "best virgin" contest winner and some French(?) sugar barge captain in Amsterdam. Both women have very different ideas on how their lives were supposed to go and react to them unraveling accordingly. The Canadian goes into some kind of stupor, the captain invites a band of libertines on board. The whole thing devolves into a shock campaign until everyone but one has been killed.
Maybe? I still don't really know.
The controversies in the film are broad. The extremely jarring, out of place black and white footage from the discovery of mass graves is likely the least offending, as it may serve as the key to why this movie was made? Otherwise, it's lots of nudity, bodily function gore, and at one point the sugar barge captain does a strip tease for some street urchins boys who've snuck on board.
Back in the day, I'd love finding these gems. They were fun to inflict pain upon my movie watching best friend Elf. But now, for the time being, I have to suffer alone.
I give Sweet Movie a very well earned F.
