In response to "I'm not sure if it makes me feel old or something but a bunch of my favorite acts have moved passed their labels" by JD

There's no substitute for proper support and development over years and years from the right label. -- (edited)

Older successful artist bios are full of these times where their sales were nonexistent or sub par. Sometimes they'd get dropped. But more often than not the label stuck with the struggling artist through a few bad releases until they finally struck paydirt.

Yeah, success or failure often came down to the right person picking up the phone and calling the right guy or whatever after years of going nowhere. But the proper label support through it all ensured the artist could take full advantage with big muscle when the stars did align for them.
