To me - it was about mental illness, depression and the feeling of being completely alone. And how easy it is these days for kids to feel that way.
And how hard it is for parents as they try to navigate through it all.
I didn't feel the show celebrated the "mediocre white make kid (not that any of those adjectives really matter here)".
Like Inigo said - it was a mistaken identity situation. He went along with it, hurt a lot of people (including his only pseudo friend and his mother) and when his lie crashed down around him, he lost everyone. I didn't see a celebration of Evan Hanson in the show at all ( i can't speak to the movie ).
