It can be both. I mostly take "recorded" classes, but I recognize some folks on the leaderboard.

The leaderboard tracks everyone who has ever taken it. I've done some live classes but not enough to develop a community. Some people are really, really into that though.
You can follow people though, and it will show when they workout and what they did, etc. I follow like 8 people, so not many at all, but I'm okay with it.
