In your argument to Will, you said that Ghostbusters, Venom and A Quiet Place 2 overperformed because the COVID expectations were much lower. Okay, cool. Then you have to apply that across the board. Because if you just look at box office, Will is right. Those three films underperformed based on the last films in the franchise.
No one expected Shang Chi to be the #1 film of the summer or the year. It held that title until No Way Home came out. Most places had it at around $60 to $70 million for the 4-day. On ST, we were talking about a $50 million over/under. It did $95 million, and beat the #1 film of the year at the time by over $30 million.
