Thursday's NYT crossword vague spoils

The theme of the puzzle is so odd
that when I put in the last letter, I was sure that
I was going to get the "there's at least one letter wrong"
message.
Several of the clues just didn't make sense.
Even after I got the key clue, I didn't understand the theme,
and wouldn't have without reading the crossword column.
That was really a bizarre puzzle, even stranger that I ended up
solving it well below my after time for a Thursday.
