i'm presuming you already have a bit of savings and that you aren't living totally no-frills-y.

i read a bunch of different advice back in the day when i was working on paying down some big debt, and one of the reasons i still recommened dave ramsey's "financial freedom" stuff is that he was pretty much the only one to say it was ok if you felt better having some savings to go ahead and do that. not a huge amount because, hello, big interest payments; but something to stay cushiony and accessible.
