If all they had done was protest, none of this would have come to pass. They're being arrested for breaking laws.

the only way this can be framed as threatening free speech is if you ignore all their other actions. They're trying to use that as cover. "You can't arrest me when I'm doing this legal thing!" "You're also doing several illegal things, which is what you're being hauled off for."
