If this lasts weeks longer and Ukraine isn't owned...and things bog down, the random Moscovite and the soldiers know they fucked up. And when you lose the people, especially because you just fucked the economy to stab for glory...you run the risk of being on the wrong end of a 6ft rope on a 15ft lightpost.

It's 40 hours in, and he's either a) trying to look magnanimous to retain public favor, or b) realizing they stepped in shit and hoping to get the boots clean before the smell wafts back home.
