Scenario A:
All the troops were somehow oblivious to the news for weeks and thought they were on a joint training mission to 'take' the entire country and were planning those routes when at the last minute they were told it wasn't a drill?
Scenario B:
The troops were told they would be training within Russian (and Belarus?) borders but at the last minute, without any advance planning or run-throughs, were told 'actually your orders are to take the country from hostile Ukranians - you'll figure it out as you make your way in'?
I feel like it's more plausible that the troops knew they were going in, and were given the routes and timing to prepare, but were lied to about how much resistance and how much assistance they'd encounter.
I would love to hear it turn out that Putin had contacts on the inside who betrayed him and left him hanging.
