But it’s Erdogan who makes the call, and human rights, monetary policy and EU oversight make it a non-starter

I’m not sure what Turks think about the EU. Certainly the Istanbullus would be for it, but there’s a whole lot of Turkey outside Istanbul plus that’s not where Erdogan gets his support.
