Speaking of genealogy... I don't know if I've ever mentioned my father's side of the family, but there are new developments.

My dad was raised by George and Elizabeth and he had a half sister named Helen. When Helen died it was revealed in her will that she was my dad's mother. She got pregnant at 15 with my dad and her mom and stepfather were his "official" parents. My dad's biological father was never named so he had no idea who he was.
I had done 23andMe and AncestryDNA a while ago on the off chance of finding something. The only matches I had could be traced on my mother's side or were so far away (4th and 5th cousins) that it seemed not worth pursuing.
A few weeks ago a new match appeared in AncestryDNA of someone who is a 1st-2nd cousin. There was no connection to my mom's side that we could tell. Also, as far as anyone knows Helen never had any other children. Just to make sure before contacting my new cousin, I got my mom to do the AncestryDNA, but her results haven't come back yet. The idea is to confirm that my new cousin is for sure from my dad's side.
My new cousin contacted me through Ancestry this weekend. He mentioned that he also does not know much about his father's side of the family. I told him what I knew to see if any of the names meant anything. He is checking with others in his family.
Genetically, it is very likely that his dad's dad is also my dad's dad which would make us half 1st cousins.
