My coworker retired and we were instructed to contribute $60 each for the gift. I thought this was shitty because nobody got to have input

into what we got but whatever. I'll suck it up.
Tonight we got an email reminding us that we are expected to cover drinks for bill (retiree) and his family at a party tomorrow night. He's bringing his wife and three kids.
I decided to skip the party for financial reasons. It's honestly just too much to spend on a dude who's gone. When I leave, nobody will buy me a $400 gift, you know? Am I an asshole?

Whoever planned the party and invited everyone should be paying for the guest of honor's drinks. -- nm

Super wrong—wonder if there was a meeting where they decided this strange course of action—what did the original email say (the not reminder one) -- nm
