yeah, I think the assumption was that the sanctions wouldn't bite this hard, but his inner circle knows they're gone if he is,

he's still weirdly popular in Russia, and he's made sure there's no real alternative.
besides, they're all old KGB buddies, and there's no such thing as an ex-KGB officer. Putin being deposed is still the least likely outcome.
