I can't even guess at what Putin thinks the endgame is at this point.

He can't pacify Ukraine even if he captures Kyiv. It's going to be, at best for Putin, a long bloody occupation that bleeds troops, equipment and money all while suffering under crippling economic sanctions.
One of two things happened (possibly both): He thought Ukraine was a pushover and his army, which he knew was a lot of smoke and mirrors, could take them OR he had no idea his army was effectively crap.
