In response to "This. The suburbs do not care about public transit. Soccer moms aren't taking the bus, etc. -- nm" by MDH

The suburbs often don't have density, so bus stops (if they exist) can be a long walk, and buses very seldom. -- (edited)

This is the route system for where I grew up, as an example (PDF link).

From my childhood home I have the following options:
1) Walk 14 minutes to a bus that comes twice in the morning (weekdays only) that will take me to the Metro North commuter rail station (Note that the bus goes the wrong direction first in order to pick up other people, so the trip to the train station will be around 25 minutes. It's a 9 minute drive to the train station).

2) Walk ~1.2 miles (busy roads, no sidewalks) to one of the main bus lines. On weekdays this bus comes by about 7 times per direction, there's anywhere from 1 hour to 2:15 between buses. On weekends, there is less service.

This is bus service that is for people who have absolutely no other option. It's not a transit anyone would choose to ride.
