They need a non-right winger first and foremost. Romney could be it cuz he's sharp on the economic issues and he's not a morality-nut.
The Dems are always one bad decision from fucking up so that'll easily occur when they get confident and start acting like liberals. Liberalism is a losing proposition in this nation.
End of the day, people like being individuals more than they want government in control. The Dems in 2006/08 won becuase they recruited the Heath Shulers, and the other pro-gun, pro-life Democrats. When the GOP realizes that they're Republicans first, conservatives 2nd, they'll contest the center again.
And Obama won't be able to bail out the Dems by being at the top of the ticket then either. And entire Democratic generation will have passed by the time he's gone; Clinton/Kerry/Biden/etc etc etc.
