True story, in the mid 80s I got a got at the local library (actually the #1 regional library outside of Boston. VERY tech advanced)

It's Andover Library, for Boston people.
I applied for an entry level job, they quickly gave me the top job for younguns, which was interlibrary loans. No shelving for ,me. I was able to find any book requested, I knew how they were mis-shelved, I knew how people gave mistaken titles/authors/whatevs and was able to find them.
The point, and I do have one, is that Interlibrary Loans in the mid 80s were done by teletype. I learned how to work the teletype. Then we went directly from teletype to email. I used the very earliest email, hosted by digital corp, in 1986. That's one hell of a transition
