I think the Russians are trying to open up their advance more than anything. They've stagnated in the east Kyiv region

so if they can open up something to the west, maybe draw the resistance away from Kyiv to make advances everywhere.
They still should be in control of the battles given the resource advantage they supposedly have...but if you're throwing all your guys into a meat grinder, you make no progress anywhere.
And any advantage you have disappears since you clearly have no sustainability program.
