They hunted the basilisk.

It captured one of the boys while the Ranger dude was knocked out.

He came too in time to observe the boy being taken away; he couldn't adhere to his creed to let him take care of himself, so he assisted the other boys in rescuing him.

They defeated the basilisk and celebrated.

The elders critiqued his teaching style, and he called them old blowhard thickheaded idiots.

And there are still more basilisks in the forest.
