When I was living in NY I had a lot of contact with Spanish people. Generally at parties, they would get drunk and forget I was not a Spanish speaker and talk to me in Spanish. I more often than not understood it and replied in English, because I'm self-conscious about mangling the language since I have no formal education in it at all.
