Every now and then I hear about dangerous diabetic foot infections, but I think "Really? Isn't that preventable?" But in February the assisted care facility housing my uncle found an infection on his toe... When looking closely determined it was down to the bone, which resulted in a likely terminal prognosis (unfortunately due to his mental state, measures like amputation and drip lines were not an option). Fortunately because the diabetes had killed the nerve endings in his feet he was in no pain.
Earlier today he was cracking jokes and flirting with the staff as usual, then died tonight without issue, exactly 8 weeks after his diagnosis.
Sugar is some serious poison.
