It's a Bill James thing -- you start at 50 points, and you get credit for K's and outs and innings pitched while losing points for walks / hits / runs

an 80 is a really solid game. A 100+ happens every 5 years or so.
Kerry Wood's 9 inning, 1 hit, 20k game was a 105.
You need to have a ton of K's, and not many hits or walks to really score great.
