I'd check your phone ecosystem first (Google, Apple HomeKit, Alexa). Most decent products (even the weird generic stuff which I also buy) has

integration to one or all of those. Makes the automation part pretty easy as each typically has all the logic you need to do basic things. I have motion sensors linked to Alexa as well as verbal commands and timed ones as well (turn on X at sunset)
