You need a few of these guys to make up for the fact 25% of your at-bats come up empty because your hitter can’t make contact.
Your clean-up hitter having guys on base is better when he does make contact … there are very few teams who do well only via the home run.
Earl Weaver’s three run Homer required 2 guys on base.
