This is what I'm going to have to deal with with the non-profit org whose board I sit on. Do we pay people their replacement cost now

or wait and have to hire their replacement when they quit and then have to train those people AND hope they are as effective from the start as the person who left.
My answer is pay them now. If someone chooses to leave, I want it to be because they've decided to pursue opportunities they can't find with us, not because we don't recognize their value.
