In response to "the fence thing isn't a big deal until you want to replace or change it, or your neighbor does. -- nm" by colin

We had this problem at our current house. As the fence aged there was a lot of guesswork as to which neighbor owned the fence and who was responsible -- (edited)

for repair, etc. Our "right hand" neighbors have a pool and wanted us to repair ours but we didn't want it. Ultimately they had to put in a fence on their property when it was falling apart because it was required for their pool. We ended up paying their fence guy a little money to rip ours out at the same time instead of paying for part of their fence.

Our "left hand" neighbors supposedly owned their part of the fence but didn't care either but insisted it was on our property not theirs so we just ended up ripping it down.
