I’m assuming a lot of it is due to leaks of ownership information of shell companies, etc. (Panama Papers and suchlike) -- (edited)

putting the information out there, that people just hadn’t had a reason to go through in detail until now to find all this out. Still takes time without a public registry of beneficial ownership though.
