not an uncommon one at the time. USSR was collapsing so they didn't want to stay, they knew Cuba would be in trouble without the support.

I think FIL said they had US$100, and didn't speak English. they lived in St. John's for a year before some Mormons moved them to Edmonton. M says most of the people in the social housing in St. John's were refugees who did something similar. not all from the USSR - Gander was a big refuelling stop.
