the original house part of my house has two bedrooms separated by a linen closet. the bedroom doors are less than six feet from one another

so by code, I am allowed to have one detector between them rather than one per room.
there are all kind of strange rules and exceptions that vary by municipality. you might want to look at your local fire code.
