four: basement, dining room, attic, bedrooms. you could argue that I should have a fifth, but due to layout, I don't have anywhere I could put it

that would be far enough away from the kitchen.
to your IM, it's recommended (though not mandaed or enforced) here by fire code that you NOT have a smoke detector in the kitchen.
