compared to payments on a new car, 2-300 a month towards repairs is reasonable.

3 senarios of low cost auto
a. buy a small car with excellent rep for reliability and drive it through out its warranty of 100,000 miles then sell/trade it while it has reasonable used value.
B. if you are handy at repairing cars buy that reliable car and keep it going
c. buy the cheapest junkers you can find and don't invest a dime not even for an oil change, walk away when they break down (this used to be a great option in inner cities where you got a couple tickets a week you could then ignore for months and months even years, now they tow or wheel clamp after as few as 3 tickets.
